Long-term Chicago restauranteur Marion W. Isbell (1905–1988) established the chain in 1953 alongside a gathering of speculators including Michael Robinson of McAllen, Texas (who later went ahead to begin Rodeway Inns in the mid 1960s) and Del Webb of Phoenix (who claimed the New York Yankees and went ahead to build up his own hotel chain, Hiway House, in 1956). Other unique financial specialists of Ramada Inns included Bill Helsing, Isbell’s brother by marriage; Max Sherman of Chicago, a deliver administrator named “The Tomato King”; Chicago lawyers Ezra Ressman and Mort Levin; and Frank Lichtenstein and Robert Rosow of San Antonio, Texas.

Right on time in 1952, Marion W. Isbell got a telephone call from his brother by marriage, Bill Helsing. Bill educated him of a lodging bargain in Flagstaff, AZ that he would put resources into and needed to know whether Marion would be occupied with going along with him. This first venture brought about a fast return of capital.

The chain at one point was claimed by Ramada Inns, Inc., a holding organization set up by Isbell to manage Ramada’s different divisions including lodging operations, diversifying, land, and hardware obtaining. Under Isbell’s administration, Ramada developed into one of the country’s biggest cabin chains amid the 1970s with 100 Ramada Inns in operation by 1964, which developed to 250 of every 1970 and almost 650 by 1976. By the late ’70s, Ramada positioned as the second biggest lodging network in the U.S. behind industry pioneer Holiday Inn. Additionally amid the 1970s, Ramada ventured into overall operation by opening new inns in different European countries and on different landmasses.

Marion W. Isbell filled in as president and CEO of Ramada until 1970, when he surrendered the administration and turned it over to his child, William M. Isbell. The senior Isbell proceeded as the chain’s CEO until his retirement in 1972 and after that executive of the board until 1979. William M. Isbell would fill in as Ramada’s leader and CEO until 1981.
